Claro launches 4G network in Nicaragua

Latin American operator Claro has launched its commercial 4G network in Nicaragua, marketing manager Diego Sibrian told local reporters.

Claro has used the 21MHz/1700MHz AWS spectrum band and 4G services are now said to be available in Managua, Esteli, Leon and Matagalpa.

Rival Telefonica's Movistar said last week that it would launch 4G services in Nicaragua “very soon”, but it seems America Movil’s Claro has just pipped it to the post.

According to Telegeography, both Claro and Movistar hold the rights to a 40MHz block in the AWS band, as well as a 40MHz block of 700MHz spectrum, all designed for LTE use.
