3 Hong Kong to launch FDD-TDD LTE-A in 2016

3 Hong Kong is set to launch a FDD-TDD LTE-A network in early 2016, following an end-to-end demonstration.

In the FDD-TDD integrated network demonstration, 3 Hong Kong used Huawei’s One LTE service to aggregate an FDD carrier with a TDD carrier in the 2.3GHz spectrum. The operator also used terminals equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X12 LTE processor.

"Carrier aggregation technology enables us to fully utilise valuable spectrum resources and devise long-term plans on network deployment so that we can continue to improve the outstanding data services we offer our customers," said Peter Wong, CEO of 3 Hong Kong.

3 Hong Kong claims it is the only local mobile operator with 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz and 2,600MHz spectrum.

The operator presently offers FDD LTE-A using its 1800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum. It intends to launch its TDD network later this year.

The company said devices that support TDD-TDD LTE-A are expected to be available early next year and it plans to launch the respective network at the same time.

“In addition to continuous network development, we are striving to provide customers with an all-round mobile communication experience with ever smoother and more stable LTE service,” said Wong.
