Telenor Norway to shut down 3G network in 2020

Telenor Norway plans to shut down its 3G network in 2020, five years before it closes 2G, according to its CTO, Magnus Zetterberg.

Zetterberg said at the company’s analyst and investor day that Telenor Norway has a long term view to dismantle legacy network and phase out 3G in 2020, before closing out 2G by 2025.

“It’s better to retain 2G than 3G because all the devices today are still embedded with 2G, so you will lose out without the network,” he added. “2G is still important for the M2M market.”

Telenor Norway aims to have 99% of the population covered by 4G by 2016. The company is set to launch VoLTE and 4G+ with a rollout expected by the end of next year.

The operator has sought to increase its 4G footprint in the country. In March 2014, it began rolling out base stations offering 4G services on the 800MHz band.
