O2 Slovakia launches LTE

O2 Slovakia has announced the commercial launch of its 4G LTE networks in Bratislava, the country’s capital, and Kosice.

The company soft-launched services in Bratislava earlier this month, and the live network is now said to offer average download and upload speeds of 25Mbps and 15Mbps respectively.

The 4G network covers a total of 165,000 people in both cities, and Martin Vlcek, general director at O2 Slovakia, said that the operator is also upgrading its 3G network which it expects to reach 65% of the population by April 2015.

The LTE service will be offered to O2 customers without extras charges; the only conditions being that they are within the coverage area and have the required SIM card to support LTE.

Slovak Telekom was the first to launch LTE services in Slovakia in November 2013, followed by market leader Orange earlier this year.
