PLDT to complete nationwide fibre rollout by 2015

Filipino operator PLDT has said it aims to complete the rollout of its fibre optic network in the first half of 2015.

The company is strengthening its footprint to cover 6000km of fibre optic cable in its Northern Luzon network, and it will make a $29.7 million investment over two years.

According to reports, the company is presently completing a route to deploy connections between Ilocos Norte and Tuguegarao in Cagayan Valley, adding to the company’s domestic fibre network in a bid to ensure resiliency.

“The fortification program for our Northern Luzon domestic fibre optic network will make our network more resilient and less susceptible to fibre breaks that could result in disruption of our services,” said Rolando Pena, head of PLDT’s network group. “These areas are vulnerable to fibre cuts due to typhoons, landslides, and public works digging.”

Its network presently spans 88000km in terrestrial and subsea capacity and PLDT claims the upgrade will benefit up to 11 million subscribers for its mobile subsidiaries, including Smart Communications and Sun Cellular.

The company has already completed work linking several parts in the country, including La Union, Isabela and Cagayan Province.

It is also aiming to ensure its data transmission network is 100% underground, to counter severe weather conditions in the country.
