Vodafone India selects Ericsson to upgrade network
Vodafone India has selected Swedish vendor Ericsson to upgrade its network and manage a pre-paid charging system for the company’s 75 million customers across five key regions.
The agreement is designed to enable better user experience for customers by allowing ‘self-service’ functionality to the company’s prepaid customer base.
Ericsson will also upgrade and modernise Vodafone India’s legacy infrastructure and implement a new charging system in the areas of Uttar Pradesh west, Uttar Pradesh east, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, with contracts in place for the circles of Mumbai and Maharashtra.
“Our solution creates greater monetisation opportunities while simultaneously reducing the overall service activation, management and delivery costs,” said Chris Houghton, head of Ericsson region India. “More importantly, it also provides Vodafone the flexibility to maintain one convergent system across all services, networks and payment methods.”
According to Ericsson, the deployment will allow for convergence across payment methods and devices, and allow the company to activate data charging via mobile broadband in the future. Customers will also be allowed to tailor make their own plans, allowing Vodafone India to offer personalised offers to its customers.
"The fast-maturing Indian mobile internet consumers expect greater control and flexibility on the kind of services they want to consume, when they want to consume and how they would like to pay for it,” said Vishant Vora, director of technology at Vodafone India. “The one size fits all and tiered pricing models for services are being fast replaced by a need for personalized services."
