The additional services include what is claimed to be the UK’s first ever 100Gbps solution, and are expected to enable CPs to transport larger amounts of data over longer distances.
Supported by Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform, the 100Gbps service is reportedly capable of delivering 10 times the traffic capacity of Openreach’s existing solutions.
“As more and more businesses move to high-bandwidth, cloud-based services and applications, our CP customers are looking to support them with a much broader range of high-quality connectivity options,” said Jon Hurry, MD of strategy, commercial, portfolio and policy at Openreach.
“These new services are futureproof and they take advantage of BT’s unrivalled investment in fibre infrastructure across the UK,” he added.
The services are expected to enable CPs to offer flexible, high-bandwidth, multi-site connectivity and cloud-based services to their enterprise and data centre customers, as well as benefit from cost reductions.
“Demand for high-bandwidth services and business-critical applications is increasing at an exponential rate,” said Nigel Williams, VP of global channels and strategic alliances at Ciena.
“Expanding our relationship with Openreach ensures that providers get the flexibility and scalability they need to build a competitive advantage in the marketplace, offer a broader portfolio of next-generation services, and the applications critical to the success of their enterprise clients.”
In January this year, BT Openreach interconnected Volta’s Great Sutton Street data centre in the UK.
