Tele2 grows stronger in Estonia with spectrum acquisition

Tele2’s Estonian subsidiary has acquired its second 2100MHz spectrum licence, doubling its 3G mobile capacity.

Tele2 acquired the licence from Estonian operator PGH Raadiovõrk OÜ, claiming the move gives it the largest spectrum portfolio in Estonia. Tele2’s portfolio includes 450 MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 2600MHz and 3500MHz frequencies.

“Our spectrum portfolio puts us in a very strong position for the future, as also this new frequency can be used for upgrading to next-generation LTE-Advanced,” said Niklas Sonkin, EVP of Central Europe and Eurasia at Tele2. “Extra frequencies allow us to increase network quality and be more cost efficient when it comes to hardware.”

Tele2 Estonia says that it will swap its 2G and 3G networks to launch 4G services nationwide throughout this year.

The move follows news that Tele2 is considering options for the future of its Norway operations, after the carrier lost out on mobile spectrum in December last year. One possibility under evaluation is for the operator to pull out of Norway completely.
