Asian operators form NFC alliance

Four Asian operators have formed an alliance to improve compatibility and adoption in near field communication (NFC) technology.

The carriers involved are Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Japan’s KDDI, South Korea’s SK Planet and Hong Kong-based HKT.

Despite the SIM-based NFC technology having successful adoption rates in Asia, services have not been interoperable across borders.

"We hope that this alliance will be an open organisation for the expansion of overseas co-operation services,” said Takashi Tanaka, president of KDDI. “We aim to actively promote collaboration with telecommunications carriers not only in Asia, but in Europe and America, and create a world in which users in every country can avail themselves of NFC services."

The alliance also aims to form a platform for NFC industries in Asia-Pacific, and develop mature NFC applications through partnerships with international groups.
