EE selects NSN to expand 4G network

UK operator EE has selected Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) to expand its 4G LTE network.

EE, which claims to be a pioneer for 4G in the UK, after being the first operator to launch the service in the country, now aims to rollout to cover 25% of the UK population in rural areas and small towns. NSN offers an end-to-end service capability and the partnership is further designed to meet EE’s 4G LTE program targets, in addition to modernising its existing networks.

The company said it is also modernising its 2G network to improve performance and reduce power consumption.

“This partnership highlights our approach to maintaining a differentiated 4G network experience,” said Olaf Swantee, CEO at EE. “We will continue to lead our competitors in speed, coverage and reliability.”

Ovum’s practice leader for industry, communications and broadband, Steven Hartley commented that EE’s 4G LTE rollout has been impressively fast, and given the presence of NSN base stations in EE’s 2G and 3G network, “it is logical for EE to opt for NSN’s Single RAN solution”, he said.

NSN’s LTE technology serves to facilitate mobile broadband connections across the UK, with low latency and superior data rates.

“There is great momentum in LTE adoption in Europe and worldwide with ever growing numbers of subscribers using data hungry services. As a long term partner of EE and the sole provider of the operator’s existing high-quality 3G network, NSN is now enabling EE to move ahead with confidence using the best technology and services for next-generation mobile broadband networks.,” added Rajeev Suri, CEO at NSN.
