PrimeTel becomes third Cypriot mobile operator

Cypriot MVNO PrimeTel has secured a mobile network operator licence in Cyprus, becoming the country’s third mobile operator.

The operator is keen to evolve from an MVNO into an MNO, and plans to roll out a 4G network.

“The acquisition of the third mobile licence has been a milestone for our company. We fully recognise that the future of broadband is mobile and as such we will proceed with this investment,” said Hermes Stephanou, CEO of PrimeTel. “Our company is committed to delivering next-generation services with speeds exceeding 30Mbps for mobile devices.”

PrimeTel operates a national network for fixed broadband services, with fixed voice, internet, and television. The company also operates an international submarine fibre-optic landing station, connecting Cyprus to the rest of the world through a global network.

Cyprus is served by mobile operators Cyta and MTN Cyprus, which have 840,100 and 330,000 subscribers respectively. Since its launch in May 2011, PrimeTel has picked up approximately 40,000 mobile subscribers.
