Alcatel-Lucent to build 1,000km cable in Libya
French vendor Alcatel-Lucent has signed an agreement with the Libyan International Telecommunication Company (LITC) to build a new 1,000km subsea cable linking Tripoli to Benghazi.
Utilising Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G technology, the system will carry capacity of 10Tbps per fibre pair and is expected to be ready in middle of 2015.
The company will also deploy a cable optimised with coherent submarine fibre, and the system is designed to support the connectivity of the Libyan economy.
LITC expects the system to significantly reconstruct the country’s telecoms infrastructure, aiding connectivity for businesses, the public sector and consumer applications.
