Telenor appoints CEO of Indian unit

Norwegian group Telenor has appointed Morten Karlsen Sørby as CEO of its Indian arm, Uninor.

Prior to the appointment, Sørby served as head of strategy and regulatory affairs at Telenor. He has previously been head of Telenor's Norwegian and Nordic mobile and fixed-network operations.

“I have actively contributed to the development of our India operations since we first entered in 2008, and now I look forward to joining the remarkable Uninor organisation," Sørby said.

Sigve Brekke was appointed interim CEO after former CEO Yogesh Malik resigned from the post in November last year.

"Morten's vast experience from the global mobile industry and solid leadership skills will inject new energy and further insights into the already empowered Uninor team," Jon Fredrik Baksaas, Telenor’s CEO, said in a statement.

The announcement comes as the company is preparing for India's spectrum auction, which will be held February 3. India’s telecom regulator DoT announced that they had amended auction rules this week.
