NSN upgrades Telkomsel networks

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has partnered with Indonesia’s Telkomsel to upgrade the operator’s 3G network across the country.

Telkomsel utilised NSN’s radio and core network, as well as other comprehensive services, to upgrade its GSM and 3G HSPA+ networks in Indonesia.

The upgrade is designed to deliver higher quality voice and data services to Telkomsel customers in the country, as well as improved network capacity, speed and coverage.

Telkomsel is also preparing for the launch of a public LTE network and showcased the services at the APEC Summit in Bali, Indonesia, in October last year.

NSN provided the refarming services for the 1800MHz GSM band to facilitate this, and the demonstration reportedly reached speeds of up to 70Mbps.

Alex J. Sinaga, CEO at Telkomsel, said that the upgrade and LTE test proves the company’s commitment to expanding broadband connectivity in Indonesia.

“It is a statement to the world that Indonesia is ready to implement the technology, and by implementing the technology in the country, we are going to support the economic development in Indonesia.”

Under terms of the agreement, NSN will also monitor, manage and operate Telkomsel’s GSM and 3G network.

“We have upgraded Telkomsel’s existing network to provide better quality voice and data services and enhance the experience for its customers, and prepared its network to launch LTE services in the near future,” said Dharmesh Malhotra, head of sub-region at NSN Indonesia.

In December last year, Telkomsel partnered with US-based cloud company Jasper Wireless for the delivery of M2M services in the region.
