Türk Telekom and Akamai have signed a strategic partnership for the deployment of an Operator Content Delivery Network (OCDN) in Turkey. Cloud service provider Akamai and the Turkish communications company will jointly build and manage a high-capacity CDN in Turkey, designed to allow for the high-quality delivery of online content and video. African operator MTN is to upgrade its 3G network in Nigeria in partnership with Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL). Microwave network solutions provider CBNL will supply, install and commission backhaul equipment to enhance service quality on MTN Nigeria’s existing 3G network. [read more]


Liquid Telecom claims it has built the first fibre-optic link into Somalia, connecting the country to neighbouring African nations and the rest of the world by fibre for the first time. The new link connects across the Kenya-Somalia border and then directly into the fibre network of Hormuud Telecom Somalia (HORTEL) for local termination. [read more]


Russian operator MTS has partnered with Samsung to launch the company’s first 4G LTE-FDD network in the Northwestern Federal District of Russia. The roll-out is part of a three-year agreement signed between MTS and Samsung in 2013, and it has been built entirely on Samsung’s LTE network and solutions. [read more]


Australian operator Telstra Global has struck an agreement with China Telecom to expand its network connectivity into mainland China. Telstra Global said it has expanded its IP-VPN network into China, with additional connections in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. [read more]


Satellite provider SES has announced that Comcast Wholesale has renewed and expanded key agreements for 650MHz of C-band capacity to deliver a range of content and management solutions to media companies in North America. The capacity enhancement enables Comcast to provide cable programmers, multiple system operators and independent cable operators access to linear and on-demand content-distribution solutions, including the company’s HITS (Headend In The Sky) platform. WIOCC and Dalkom Somalia will launch connectivity to and from Somalia via the EASSy cable from Q1 2014. The agreement means the companies will offer direct services from Mogadishu to the rest of the world. [read more]


Telstra Global has announced the expansion of its "Connected Colocation" capability and coverage, in response to growing demand for robust and high-performance cloud solutions across the world. The company has also expanded and integrated six data centre locations in Asia, Australia and North America, with the moves intended to allow for new connectivity across a single integrated service level agreement.
