The agreement means the companies will offer direct services from Mogadishu to the rest of the world. Capacity between 2Mbps to 10Gbps and above will become available to companies and customers in the country.
Chris Wood, CEO at WIOCC, said the roll-out and uptake of internet access and advanced services had been severely restricted in Somalia until now, because the company had been served exclusively by satellite.
“WIOCC and Dalkom will be the first into commercial operation with international fibre-optic connectivity direct into Mogadishu,” he said. “The new services from WIOCC will reduce the cost of international bandwidth and drive significant improvements in performance.”
Dalkom Somalia, WIOCC’s domestic partner, is building a 1,000 square metre data centre to host equipment for all Mogadishu operators and ISPs, to facilitate direct connection into the international fibre network.
