Equinix moves into western Japan with launch of Osaka data centre

Global data centre provider Equinix has announced it is to open a data centre in Osaka, Japan, its first in the western region of the country.

The data centre, which is being rolled out in partnership with access provider K-Opticom and Kanden Energy Solutions (KENES), is hoped to enhance global connectivity in Osaka, Japan’s second largest economy after Tokyo.

The facility will provide a total capacity of 32,000 square feet, with the first phase of the $12 million project due to open in the final quarter of this year.

“Osaka is another important strategic market, along with Tokyo in Japan. Many of our global customers have requested Equinix data center services in Osaka. With the support of K-Opticom, Kenes and O-BIC, we can meet that demand,” said Kei Furuta, managing director of Equinix Japan.

The data centre has been designed with seismically isolated infrastructure and is centrally located in Osaka in order to minimise risk from floods and earthquakes.

Network resilience has been a huge issue for providers with a presence in Asia. Typhoons and earthquakes can cause irreparable damage to cables, exemplified by the tsunami that struck Japan in 2011, raising the importance of protecting key infrastructure.

Last month saw the launch of the Southeast Asia-Japan Cable route which avoids the earthquake zone in North Asia yet still provides reliable connectivity to seven countries including Hong Kong and Japan.
