Dutch telco, KPN International, has completed what is thought to be Europe's first field trial of 400G technology, according to local reports. KPN partnered with Huawei for the trial of an OTN-based 400G network, spanning 540km from Amsterdam, the Netherlands to Dusseldorf, Germany. [read more]




 

Brazilian operator Telebras and the National Telecommunications Agency have partnered with the telecoms company of Uruguay to set up a joint infrastructure and integrate the networks of both countries. The initiative is the first by the South American countries to implement an optical ring. [read more]




 

Russia's Beeline has completed a tender on LTE equipment supplies for the deployment of an LTE network in six regions across the country, according to local reports. A subsidiary of Russian mobile operator, Vimpelcom, Beeline will reportedly partner with equipment vendor, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), for the deployment in Altay, Adygeya, Astrakhan and Kalmykia. Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) has told local reporters it is placing a greater focus on increasing 3G mobile data speeds this year. Somchai Lertsutiwong, CMO at AIS, admitted that the company's mobile broadband service is running at a slower speed than advertised. [read more]




 

Alcatel-Lucent has signed an agreement with global network exchange provider Epsilon to deploy the French equipment vendor's optical transport and IP network. The network will combine IP and 100G optical networking to allow Epsilon to address the growing demand for higher quality and more cost effective broadband and video services. [read more]




 

Korea's SK Telecom has launched what it claims to be the world's first LTE-Advanced network. The LTE-A services are designed to offer network speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is double the speed of the existing LTE and three times faster than the 3G network. [read more]




 

Tele2's Norwegian business has partnered with Ericsson for the deployment of a 4G network in the country. Under terms of the agreement, Ericsson will upgrade Tele2' existing 2G and 3G networks to enable nationwide next-generation coverage. [read more]




 

NTT Communications has announced plans to launch software-defined networking (SDN)-based cloud services to customers in Japan. The service, On-premises Connection, is designed to allow for the seamless transition to cloud through on-site connectivity with NTT's Enterprise Cloud. [read more]


Vodafone's Greek division has signed a 15-year agreement with Wind Hellas to share 2G and 3G networks. Vodafone Greece tried to merge with the Greek operator last year, but abandoned the plan in February 2012 following reported concerns from European regulators. [read more]


 

 

SingTel has announced that the Southeast Asia-Japan Cable (SJC) is now operational across seven territories. The system is supplied by TE SubCom and NEC Corporation, and it is designed to provide connectivity to a range of destinations across the world to provide resilient services to other submarine cable systems.
