Ericsson delivers LTE roaming services to Swisscom
Ericsson has partnered with Swisscom for the delivery of its latest product, expected to enable the Swiss operator to launch global LTE roaming services.
The Diameter Signaling Controller (DSC) is designed to manage the growing demand for diameter signalling in mobile networks, which Ericsson expects to increase by up to ten times between 2011 and 2016.
“As the leading mobile operator in Switzerland, launching 4G/LTE roaming was an important step for us and all our 4G/LTE subscribers,” said Heinz Herren, CTO at Swisscom.
“They will now be able to use their services while travelling to many different countries in Asia and the Americas."
Swissom expects it will now be the only European company able to deliver LTE roaming services on such scale.
Ericsson’s DSC is deployed on the company’s Blade System platform, meaning it has a more scalable capacity, and is expected to play a large role with the future implementation of voice over LTE services.
“We have now passed a major milestone in our development project for the Diameter Signaling Controller,” said Magnus Furustam, VP and head of product area core and IMS at Ericsson.
“Our solution will alleviate some of the signalling load and make the signalling network even more reliable.”
Ericsson signed a deal with MetroPCS earlier this year, for the upgrade of its network to 4G.
