Ooredoo develops singular tower top design

Ooredoo and CommScope have developed a factory-assembled, singular design for base station tower tops to update the Qatari operator’s existing systems.

Ooredoo is seeking ways to upgrade or replace 15,000 of its base stations as it looks to roll out 3G and 4G LTE networks in its home market.

Maintaining existing cellular sites is said to have become increasingly time consuming and expensive for operators. Infrastructure is typically assembled on site at the top of the tower, and a lack of clear standards had made any planned upgrade a challenge, according to both companies.

“Working with CommScope to develop a new tower top solution that is assembled in a factory will enable us to deliver a distinctly different approach to building and operating a wireless network,” said Paul Salmon, CTO at Ooredoo.

Both companies have worked together to create infrastructure which, they claim, will provide greater network capacity, reduced installation costs and use less electricity.

The new designs are tailored with the aim to reduce “installation time by approximately 50%” and is set to be rolled out across its markets in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.
