Reliance Communications grants $1 billion contract to Ericsson

Reliance Communications announced today that it has entered into an 8-year contract with Ericsson, estimated at $1 billion.

Ericsson will reportedly manage the Indian carrier’s wireline and wireless networks across the northern and western states of the country.

“Given the complexity of network increasing with platforms, technologies and applications offerings, we are banking on the experience, innovation and technical expertise of Ericsson to improve the productivity of our network,” said Gurdeep Singh, CEO for wireless business at Reliance Communications.

The deal is expected to cover 100,000km of fibre and mobile infrastructure in 11 telecoms circles, including Delhi and Mumbai.

According to local reports 5,000 Reliance employees will also be transferring to Ericsson as part of the contract.

This follows a very similar deal Reliance made with Alcatel-Lucent to manage its networks in east and south India last month.
