Bharti Airtel linked with Myanmar licence

India’s Bharti Airtel is reportedly among the bidders for a telecoms licence in Myanmar.

Two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that the bid was part of plans to expand the carrier’s overseas operations.

A Bharti statement to Reuters didn’t confirm or deny bidding for a licence in the country: "We are always open to opportunities provided there is a strategic fit and the market offers significant potential."

Earlier this month Myanmar’s government invited expression of interest in two mobile licences in the country as part of plans to increase telecoms penetration to 80% by 2016. The deadline for submitting bids was Friday.

Singapore’s SingTel and Telemedia have also been linked with the bidding process, as well as Malaysia’s Axiata.

The concessions are expected to be awarded by the government in June this year with a 20-year term and an option for renewal.
