Three operators submit interest in Myanmar
Three operators have submitted interests to the Myanmar government for telecoms operating concessions.
According to newswire Bloomberg, SingTel and Telemedia, both of Singapore, and Malaysian company Axiata are in the market to invest in the country.
Myanmar’s government revealed plans to offer two licences earlier this month, with the aim of boosting telecoms penetration to 80% by 2016.
SingTel confirmed it maintains “an interest in investment opportunities in large, underpenetrated markets and will be financially disciplined in its evaluation of such opportunities”. The company also confirmed it had submitted its interests with Myanmar-based partners.
Axiata said to Bloomberg that it was a logical step to invest in Myanmar given its potential. The concessions are expected to be awarded by the government in June this year, with a 20-year term and an option for renewal.
