LANautilus deploys Ciena’s 40G on submarine network

Latin American Nautilus (LANautilus), Telecom Italia Sparkle’s wholesale operation in the Americas, has upgraded a 16,000km stretch of its submarine network, connecting Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Panama, Venezuela, and St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, with 40Gbps coherent technology.

Through the network enhancement LANautilus is able to increase its total network capacity, effectively quadrupling the amount of information transmitted per wavelength, according to Ciena, the vendor that carried out the deployment.

The upgrade is also claimed to allow faster support to service provider and enterprise customers in the Caribbean and South and Central America.

“We are now able to offer our customers high-capacity bandwidth services to support the delivery of IP, managed bandwidth, HD video and cloud computing, among other applications, at speeds that scale to 40G. Further, Ciena’s intelligent software capabilities will allow us to combine competitive and effective service level agreements with our service offering,” said Mario Pirro, CTO at Telecom Italia Sparkle Group.

Under the agreement, Ciena’s unified management system will also be will be applied across the common photonic layer and the optical solution platforms used for the deployment, providing services including multi-layer service activation and SLA monitoring.

LANautilus operates a 30,000km fibre-optic ring, with a submarine system integrating cable stations in South, Central and Northern America with Telecom Italia Sparkle’s global backbone.
