Viettel expresses interest in Kenyan wireless sector

Vietnamese operator Viettel is reportedly interested in entering the Kenyan wireless sector as it seeks to grow its business in the African continent.

Viettel launched mobile unit Movitel in Mozambique in a joint venture with the government and a local investor in May, and it appears the company is keen to further expand across the emerging market.

In an email exchange with a local publication, the company’s general director, Nguyen Duy Tho said: “Viettel has been the smallest investor among international telecommunications investors but we have grown well in developing markets.” Duy Tho did not confirm any deadline or projections for a Kenyan roll out.

Viettel claims to have rolled out 1800 mobile base transceiver stations and deployed 12,600km of fibre optic cable in Mozambique. It has operations on both sets of infrastructure in south east Africa.

If it plans to establish a Kenyan mobile unit come to the fore, it will have operations in seven international markets. To date it owns licences and assets in Cambodia, Laos, Haiti, Mozambique, Timor-Leste and Peru.
