Oi selects Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft for IPTV
Brazilian operator Oi has entered into an agreement with Alcatel-Lucent, and selected Microsoft’s Mediaroom platform for the launch of IPTV services in Brazil.
The operator’s IPTV strategy is based upon market research that has identified demand for the service in 20 cities across the country, as well as Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.
Oi has been investing in the deployment of a fibre network as part of the initiative, to connect homes and offer high-speed internet access, on top of landline phone services.
"The launch of the IPTV service will benefit our customers because it provides a more interactive and comprehensive TV experience. Also, IPTV results in income generation for the company through the provision of value-added services, such as video on demand (VOD). With this new pay-TV service, Oi strengthens its converging offer strategy," said Eduardo Aspesi, segment director at Oi.
Alcatel-Lucent’s products, services and software will be utilised for the service, including its Velocix CDN, Motive Service Quality Manager, copper-based VDSL-2 technology and fibre-based GPON technology. The vendor will also manage the integration of the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV solution.
Oi said that services will be launched gradually across the country, with the names of additional cities to be provided at a later date.
