Mobile services adoption in Costa Rica

The Costa Rican telecoms market is experiencing rapid adoption of mobile services.

A report by Pyramid Research has found that mobile voice is still expanding, but its growth will soon slow as users migrate to data services.

It is forecast that mobile data revenues will expand 27.2% between 2011 and 2016 and by the end of the forecast period are expected to be as large as revenues from mobile voice services.

Fixed broadband is expected to achieve 11.9% growth and become larger than fixed voice by 2015. Other expansions include, VoIP and pay-TV services, where IPTV will account for around 10% of total revenue by the end of 2016.

Pyramid Research notes the significant investment local player ICE has made to deploy its fixed broadband service, and successfully penetrated the service over the past three years in residential markets.
