China leading consumer of FTTx equipment in 2010

China was the leading consumer of FTTx equipment in 2010, according to analyst group Ovum.

The number of FTTB connections is predicted to reach 56,208 by 2014, growing 44% from 2009. Initial deployments of fibre focussed on FTTB, using either DSL, ADSL, VDSL, wireless or LAN.

FTTH is predicted to be more successful in wealthier areas where subscribers will reach 18,100 by 2014, growing 107% from 2009. The number of FTTH subscribers in 2009 represented 5% of all FTTx subscribers and is expected to grow to a quarter of all FTTx subscribers by 2014.

The report also notes that the number of FTTH subscribers could overtake the number of FTTB subscribers by 2020. Carriers in China are beginning to see FTTH as a competitive advantage for attracting subscribers in richer areas. Chinese system vendors Huawei, ZTE and FiberHome were ranked first, second and fourth respectively in Q4 2010 global rankings.
