Pakistan’s TW1 cable gets an upgrade

Pakistan’s first private submarine fibre-optic cable operator, Transworld Associates, and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Company have announced plans to upgrade the TW1 undersea cable system.

SubCom’s upgrade solution will provide greater connectivity by adding six additional wavelengths to the existing system. The TW1 cable system, owned by Transworld, presently covers 1,274km and connects Karachi, Pakistan to Al Seeb, Oman and Fujairah, UAE. The subsea system comprises of a two-fibre pair link with potential capacity of up to 1.28Tbps.

Transworld believes the additional high-speed connectivity will aid the growth of IT and telecoms in Pakistan.

“This upgrade will enable Transworld to maintain its extreme importance for the development of reliable broadband services in Pakistan as well as in the Middle East,” said Kamran Malik, president of Transworld. “This upgrade is indeed a significant step for Transworld, as we are demonstrating again our capabilities to meet expectations for high-quality international connectivity services for our ever-demanding Pakistani and Middle Eastern customers.”

Transworld was started after the deregulation and privatisation of the Pakistani market to provide more routes for the growing volume of traffic in the region.

“This project with Transworld is the latest in a string of upgrade initiatives taken on by SubCom and is further evidence of our capabilities in the upgrade arena,” said Michael Rieger, VP of sales for SubCom. “As more providers seek to tap the maximum capacity from their installed undersea cable assets, we will be available with the technology and expertise necessary to complete effective and timely upgrades.”
