TNB Telecom picks Mimosa to boost Rio Olympics bandwidth

Additional 1Gbps bandwidth used to support 700% increase in data use during August event

Cloud-managed and fixed wireless networks provider Mimosa delivered an additional 1Gbps of additional bandwidth to TNB Telecom to support extra demand for online services during the Rio Olympics.

Using Mimosa’s technology, Brazilian broadband provider TNB provided high capacity services across the city during the Games, which ran from August 5 to August 21.

The Games led to a 700% increase in traffic across the region during recent weeks, according to TNB Telecom, which resulted in in deploying Mimosa B5c connectorized radios and B50Lite backhaul radios.

The two firms spent two days carrying out lab tests prior to deployment. The technology meant TNB could offer speeds of up to 550Mbps/450Mbps , with clients receiving between 20Mbps and 200Mbps bandwidth depending on their demands.

“Providing connectivity able to support high-bandwidth services in dense urban areas during major international events provides a huge challenge for local operators, many of whom have little experience in provisioning for this level of demand,” said Jaime Fink, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Mimosa.

“Delivering a scalable, high-performance broadband network able to cope with traffic increases of 700%, was an outstanding achievement and is testament to the expertise of TNB Telecom and the flexibility of the Mimosa solution.”

The partnership was delivered by Mimosa’s official Brazilian reseller, Click Mobile, who installed the solution across the city.

“We were surprised by the number of opportunities that arose during the summer,” said Felipe Ouro Preto, Operations Manager at TNB Telecom. “We examined a number of alternatives but the only way to quickly deliver the extra bandwidth required while considering cost and availability of products was to use Mimosa backhaul radios.”
