Over 400 million mobile devices sold in Q1

The total number of mobile devices sold to end users reached 427.8 million in the first quarter of this year. Research firm Gartner found that the total number of units made a year-on-year increase of 19%.

Smartphones accounted for 23.6% of all sales during the period which is a year-on-year increase of 85%.

During the first quarter of this year, Nokia sold 107.6 million mobile devices, but its market share decreased by 5.5% year-on-year, marking its lowest share since 1997.

Samsung recorded its strongest ever first quarter after selling 68.8 million units. This was attributed to the company’s shift to manufacturing higher end smartphones, which led to an increase in its average selling prices.

Apple sold 16.8 million units over the period, more than doubling its sales of the iPhone in the space of a year and HTC started the year equally well after selling 9.3 million devices.
