Colt puts stake in ground for 10 new hyperscale data centres

Colt has followed the sale of 12 edge colocation centres across Europe by announcing expansion of its hyperscale data centres in Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions.

The company has acquired ten new parcels of land that will allow it to develop around 100MW of IT power in London, Frankfurt and Paris plus unspecified Japanese locations. It has not said how much it has spent on the land.

Niclas Sanfridsson (pictured), CEO of Colt Data Centre Services, said: “Colt DCS has truly put a stake in the ground with the acquisition of these ten new sites, signalling to the market the continued success of our approach.”

Only two months ago Colt DCS said it has disposed of 12 data centres to AtlasEdge, also for an undisclosed sum.

As a result, AtlasEdge’s portfolio increased to more than 100 data centres in 11 countries in Europe, supporting more than 700 customers and providing connectivity to more than 50 different on-net carriers.

Colt’s move today confirms its greater focus on hyperscale data centres, though it has not put a price either on the cost of acquiring ten greenfield sites or on building the new facilities.

“The new sites see the capacity of Colt DCS’s portfolio increase dramatically by over 500MVA of secured power to support the development of hyperscale data centres,” said the company this morning.

“The demand for such hyperscale facilities has grown significantly in recent years due to cloud computing – it is predicted that total spend on cloud services will reach over $1.3 trillion by 2025,” said Colt, quoting an IDC forecast from September 2021.

Sanfridsson, who joined Colt DCS as CEO two years ago, said: “This announcement marks yet another major milestone in the acceleration of its hyperscale strategy and positions Colt DCS as a major hyperscale and large enterprise data centre provider in the market.”

He added: “This is an extremely exciting time for the business as our vision of becoming the most trusted and customer-centric hyperscale data centre operator in the industry is realised.”

His colleague Richard Wellbrock, VP of real estate, said: “Refining our portfolio has enabled us to go into full growth mode.”

He added: “We want to create success for our partners, customers, and for the future of the business. Focusing clearly on the hyperscale and large enterprise business enables us to do just that. We are now in position to swiftly bring about meaningful and sustainable change in the market.”

The new sites will have the flexibility to grow in the long term, said Colt. “Not only this, but the breadth of Colt DCS’s locations and industry knowledge will empower customers to enter new markets much faster, with the support of a trusted provider with global expertise.”

Colt DCS repeated its “commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2040”, saying that this “means that the new data centres will be in line with its ethos, as well as customers’ sustainability targets”.
