Spectrum Watch: Singapore and North Macedonia

Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has announced it has allocated more spectrum to local 5G mobile network operators.

As the country aims to grow its 5G services, the regulator revealed that Singtel and M1-StarHub consortium boosted its 5G spectrum holdings in a 2.1GHz auction.

In the same auction, TPG Telecom won 10MHz of 2.1GHz spectrum as it looks to create its own nationwide 5G network. The network entered the market in 2016 and holds spectrum in the 900MHz and 2.3 GHz bands.

Singtel and M1-StarHub are required by the regulator to reach 50% coverage by the end of 2022 and the same feat is required for TPG by 2023.

Anna Yip, CEO of Singtel’s consumer business said the 2.1GHz spectrum will help “accelerate the roll-out of our 5G standalone network and further strengthen our 5G leadership”.

North Macedonia

North Macedonian regulator the Electronic Communications Agency (AEK) has announced a public tender for the allocation of 5G mobile frequencies.

The regulator is offering three licenses in the 700MHz band and seven in the 3GHz band, it said last week.

The spectrum allocation will be available to North Macedonian operators and four have already expressed interest in 5G licenses.

Among those are A1 Makedonija, Neotel, Makedonski Telekom and Bitsream Mobile.

By the end of 2027, North Macedonia aims to cover all major urban areas and transport routes with 5G coverage and the country aims to extend 5G coverage to the entire country by 2029.
