AirTrunk plans Asia-Pacific's largest hyperscale data centre

Hyperscale specialist AirTrunk is planning to build a new Sydney facility it describes as " the largest single campus in the Asia-Pacific region", excluding China.

Planned to offer more than 320MW, AirTrunk SYD3 (pictured) will be located less than one kilometre from SYD1. It will include nine phases set across 8.3 hectares (20.5 acres) and be powered by a 132KV onsite substation.

To reduce environmental impact it will use 80% less water than a traditional data centre and will feature a range of innovations during design, construction, and operation to "deliver efficiencies and minimise carbon impact for customers and communities".

Founder and CEO of AirTrunk, Robin Khuda, said: “It’s an exciting day as we circle back to Western Sydney where it all began for AirTrunk when we launched our flagship SYD1 data centre in late 2017. With SYD1 nearing full capacity, SYD3’s location less than one kilometre away, will help our major technology customers scale with ease and creates synergies and efficiencies between the connected campuses.”

Once complete SYD3 will take AirTrunk's Asia-Pacific portfolio to seven hyperscale data centres – four of which are in Australia – with a total capacity exceeding 1GW. It includes facilities in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

In Sydney AirTrunk already has the 130MW SYD1 in Western Sydney and earlier this year launched a new region in the north of the city with the 110MW SYD2. AirTrunk Western Sydney presence will exceed 450MW with the SYD1 and SYD3 connected campuses allowing new and existing customers to grow.

On tenants AirTrunk highlighted that each of its facilities has been anchored by a major CSP.
