Zella DC has deployed its first micro data centre in Japan as part of an edge computing solution aimed at telecom operators.

The Zella Hut – an outdoor version of the Zella Pro – will be part of an edge computing solution developed by Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) the first commercial ISP in Japan. It is developing a multi-access edge computing (MEC) solution that will complement 5G roll-outs.

Angie Keeler (pictured), Zella DC CEO and co-founder said: "We are excited about this partnership with IIJ and to deploy our first Zella Hut in Japan. Edge Computing and 5G Connectivity are at the core of our business. It's great to be part of this trial and to work with IIJ to develop this innovative solution."

In particular the Zella Hut will be used by IIJ's telecoms customers. It is billed as "waterproof and dust proof" and includes: cooling, a UPS, environmental sensors, security cameras and "various physical security features".

In August, a fully DC powered version of the Zella Hut was launched, which the company said was better suited to the needs of telcos.

Yoshikazu Yamai, managing executive officer, DX Edge project team said: "Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) is the first commercial internet service provider in Japan. We are progressing our service capability of IT and digital infrastructure, including the data centre. We've been planning to add the micro data centre to our data centre product line-up. Zella Hut is the micro data centre we are looking for because it will be one of our edge computing solution enablers. I'm confident that the partnership with Zella DC and IIJ leads our cutting-edge technology and provides more value to our customers," says
