Customers in remote areas of Italy will be able to connect to TIM’s broadband services from today thanks to a deal with Eutelsat.

TIM, the former Telecom Italia, says customers outside its fibre or fixed wireless access (FWA) areas will be able to get up to 100Mbps download and 5Mbps upload via the satellite service.

The company is charging €49.90 a month for the service, including antenna, connected with a local area network and Wifi ports inside the home – valued at €5-€10 a month over 48 months.

The service, called TIM Super Sat, is not available everywhere in Italy, TIM said. “The offer can be sold throughout the country with the exception of Sicily and central-southern Sardinia and is reserved for new customers not covered by other TIM broadband and ultra-broadband technologies.”

TIM said: “The TIM Super Sat offer is available from today to bring super-fast connectivity with the best technologies, even to the most remote areas of Italy.”

The company added: “The initiative confirms TIM’s commitment to overcome the digital divide, by providing Italian families with the best super-fast connectivity solutions even in areas not yet reached by TIM’s fibre or fixed wireless access (FWA) networks.”

The deal includes TimVision, the group’s video-on-demand service which includes Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and other channels.

The announcement follows days after Deutsche Telekom also said it was using Eutelsat to offer rural broadband in Germany. Eutelsat is also now the second largest shareholder in OneWeb, the UK/Indian satellite project that is due to launch services by the end of the year.
