American Tower has closed its acquisition of colo provider DataSite, bolstering its presence in the edge data centre space.

American Tower is now responsible for all DataSite's facilities in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Orlando, Florida, which is a new market for the REIT. It means that since stepping into data centres in 2019, American Tower has grown its portfolio to nine facilities.

“Since entering the data centre market we’ve been committed to meeting the growing demands of our customers by expanding critical connectivity services,” said Eric Watko (pictured), VP of product line management for American Tower.

“These metro data centres are critical to our edge strategy, as they contain the carrier hotel, providing interconnectivity access to internet exchanges and cloud services,” Watko.

American Tower's data centre strategy started with one metro facility in Atlanta, three years ago. Six additional edge facilities have been added in Atlanta, Austin, Boulder, Denver, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh.

In September, American Tower launched an edge channel partner programme, to expand its market reach for colocation and carrier-neutral data centres.

Partners receive exclusive access to American Tower metro and edge data centres for a distributed network architecture, that supports “improved network elasticity” and provides infrastructure “ready for 5G and advanced applications”, said American Tower.

In June, the firm completed the first tranche of its Telxius Tower acquisition, picking up 31,000 tower sites and paving for investments of around $500 million to construct a "committed pipeline" of 3,300 new sites in Germany and Brazil by 2025.

“DataSite is in good hands with American Tower,” said Jeff Burges, former president of DataSite.

“They have shown a commitment to expanding in this industry and providing our customers the same level of service, with the same team they’ve come to expect.
