In this final instalment of the Where are they now series, is Chindata Group which was awarded the trophy for Best Asian Project at the 2020 Global Carrier Awards.

As a carrier-neutral hyperscale data centre solution provider in Asia-Pacific, the 2020 judges lauded Chindata’s entry as having “excellent metrics, great proof points, thorough and compelling”.

In addition, they said that the company “provided a strong narrative of innovation and achievement while blending in a potent renewal energy. This entry gives a good sense of speed to market and needs in the region”.

Not long after the company’s win, Chindata opened the doors to the largest single data centre in Asia, located in Datong, North China's Shanxi province.

The data centre has a total IT capacity of 50MW to support artificial intelligence-based computing delivered by global tech giants. Chindata initially employed three self-own 110kV cabin substations and one back-up 35kV substation.

By December 2020, Chindata broke ground on its first high-end equipment manufacturing industrial base in Hebei Province, China. The new facility will facilitate the research & development, design and manufacturing of prefabricated modules, flexible intelligent manufacturing, data centre modules, equipment modules and professional products.

At the start of the year, the company unveiled its roadmap all its data centres in China to be carbon neutral and with its 100% renewable energy solution by 2030. As part of this strategy Chindata Group committed to investing in clean energy with an installed capacity of no less than 2GW by 2030.

June saw Chindata enter an agreement with Tencent Holdings to develop cloud computing infrastructure and promote carbon neutrality.

Specifically, the two will leverage their respective resources and cooperate in areas such as governance, industry, culture and tourism, education, healthcare, energy and transportation.

The first stage of the collaboration will centre on smart city, industrial internet, smart culture and tourism, and smart healthcare.

Most recently, Chinadata entered a strategic agreement on a zero-carbon digital infrastructure project with Datong municipal government. The project dubbed ‘Peach Blossom Land’, Chindata will work together with ecosystem partners to develop China's first super energy complex that empowers smart cities and other use cases.
