Virgin Media O2 has announced a free speed boost for its UK small businesses to help them bounce recover from Covid-19.

Effective immediately, all small to medium enterprise (SME) customers using the company’s Voom Fibre broadband services will see their upload speed increase and, in some cases, more than double.

Research shows that than two thirds of SMEs reported a decline in revenues during the pandemic, with nearly half adapting or pivoting their business model and embracing new technologies. Three quarters believe changes made during the pandemic will become permanent.

As a result, this network boost from Virgin Media O2 will enable businesses working in more than 100,000 locations across the country can sign up for ultrafast services that can support their recovery.

“We’re supercharging business broadband with a completely free upgrade that will help SMEs bounce back from the pandemic,” said Jo Bertram, managing director of business & wholesale at Virgin Media O2.

“After a very challenging year, connectivity has been core to survival for many small businesses, with most uploading and downloading more than ever before.  As part of our mission to upgrade the UK we want to help get our nation’s entrepreneurs back on their feet, starting with a free digital boost.”

Voom Fibre broadband packages offer download speeds starting at 350Mbps and reaching 500Mbps on Voom 500. Following the upgrade, upload speeds will start at 20Mbps and reach speeds of 50Mbps on the Voom 500 package.

In related news, May saw the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) give final approval of the £31 billion joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefónica to merge Virgin Media and O2 – now known at Virgin Media O2.

Completed June 1 2021, the new entity is expected to deliver synergies of approximately £6.2 billion and approximately £11 billion of revenue, valuing Virgin Media at £18.7 billion and O2 at £12.7 billion, respectively.
