Digital Fortress has opened its $100 million data centre campus in Richmond, Virginia to customers, after acquiring the site for development earlier this year.

After capturing the facility on the 100-acre Meadowville Technology Park (pictured), the first refurbished data centre is 250,000 sq ft and is certified to Tier 3.

The site is connected with a newly built, fully diverse multi-duct fibre system, offering 4ms latency to hubs in Ashburn and Virginia Beach, and onward direct connectivity to subsea fibre systems serving Europe and South America.

The facility is LEED Gold Certified with “significant expansion capabilities” within the existing data centre shell, said the firm, with expansion capacity on the wider campus area too.

The current availability consists of 18,300 sq ft of data centre space with 4.1MW of power. An additional 200,000 sq ft of shell core expansion space supporting up to 25 MW of total power will be deployable “in under 20 weeks”, said Digital Fortress.

Adjacent land is available to support future builds totalling 500,000 sq ft, with up to 100MW of power available on-site in a “2-3 year time horizon”, said the firm.

“We are offering Digital Fortress’ data centre solutions at an entirely new scale in the burgeoning Richmond, Virginia market,” said Juan Saca, CEO of Digital Fortress. “Richmond is a rapidly growing data centre hub that is a highly-connected and cost-effective location for enterprise and hyperscale customers.”

Digital Fortress also operates the affiliated Chirisa, Dataplex and Viatel businesses. At the beginning of this year, Digital Fortress acquired the colocation business of Atmosera.

That deal extended the company’s footprint to 10 data centre facilities, providing colocation, network and cloud services to large and mid-size enterprises.
