Global network services provider Hurricane Electric has added 13 points-of-presence across the EdgeConneX international edge data centre footprint, to lower latency and improve operations for businesses.

The new PoPs in Europe and North America will bring IP data transit and access to data storage and multi-clouds closer to enterprises and end-user applications.

The new PoPs are located in Munich, Warsaw, Toronto, Phoenix, Santa Clara, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Portland, Nashville, Salt Lake City and Seattle.

Hurricane Electric will use the EdgeConneX data centre family and partner ecosystem to provide its global customers with high-speed IP transit through its IPv6 and IPv4 network using 1/10/100GE (Gigabit Ethernet) ports.

Walt Wollny, director of interconnection strategy at Hurricane Electric, said: “Joining the EdgeConneX growing global ecosystem of partners and edge data centres will provide invaluable IP transit and connectivity resources to enterprises operating in these in-need markets.”

Aron Smith, vice president of interconnection product management at EdgeConneX, added: “We often reference the edge being as proximate to the end-user as possible, but there is, in fact, a ‘new edge’ to consider.

“The ‘new edge’ could be looked at as ‘edge to the home’ as a more distributed workforce becomes the norm. We are continuing to address this evolving demand by bringing our considerable edge partner ecosystem to the front doors of innovators and digital transformers everywhere - be it a business or remote worker location.”

Earlier this year, Hurricane Electric established PoPs at Digital Realty data centres across nine global metros, extending the reach of Digital Realty’s PlatformDIGITAL inter-connectivity platform.

The PoPs were at Digital Realty facilities in Amsterdam, Ashburn, Dallas, Frankfurt, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Zagreb.

Last week, EdgeConneX said it had broken ground on a new 8MW edge data centre near Barcelona to help address the cloud service and colocation needs of local firms. The 82,000 sq ft facility is located in the Sant Boi de Llobregat region, just 15km from Barcelona city centre.
