Nokia aims to halve emissions to 2030

Nokia has made a public pledge to half its emissions by 2030 based on its 2019 levels.

Signed off by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Nokia’s new target is to reduce emissions by 50% across both its own operations and products in use, by 2030.

These latest developments follow Nokia's earlier SBTs, announced in 2017. It achieved 90% of these targets, which were set to support the international target of limiting global warming to 2°C. Now that has been reduced to 1.5°C, Nokia is adopting "more ambitious targets" for its own operations.

President and CEO Pekka Lundmark said: “We have led the way in reducing emissions from our own operations and helping our customers to do the same by continuously innovating to make our products more energy efficient in recent years. But climate change is a race against time. These tougher, new, scientifically-calibrated climate targets mean we will go further and faster to reduce our carbon footprint and ensure sustainability is at the heart of our product design and the smart solutions we enable.”

The new targets cover a broader base, close to 100% of the company’s current product portfolio. They also now include emissions from both logistics and assembly factories within its supply chain, as well as emissions from Nokia’s own operations, i.e. scopes 1, 2 and 3.

SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTs are authenticated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) that works with private sector businesses to validate their emissions reduction targets in line with global requirements.
