Today marks the 16th annual Global Carrier Awards (GCAs) and today the industry’s most prominent names and figures from around the globe, will gather to celebrate our sector’s biggest achievements over the last 12 months.

Hosted by João Marques Lima, editor-in-chief of Capacity and Data Economy, the virtual ceremony will also feature guest appearances from Euromoney’s Ros Irving, the chair of this year’s judging panel, Carl Roberts as well as other judges.

“For 15 years, the Global Carrier Awards has been revered as the highest recognition across the entire wholesale telecoms community. From celebrating achievements to showcasing the evolution of the industry through its responsive categories, the Global Carrier Awards will once again raise the bar,” said Lima.

“We invite everyone to join us tonight for this year's virtual ceremony broadcast, where we promise to deliver a fully interactive virtual experience, with maybe even a few surprises! In a year that has experienced so much disruption, we will continue to keep the world connected.”

With over 200 nominations across 39 awards categories, the 2020 ceremony promises to recreate the same red-carpet magic and engaging experience we’ve come to expect from these Awards.

If that weren’t enough, this year will also feature a number of competitions and raffles, taking place during the ceremony, as well as word from other innovators and thought leaders in the space.

Since its inception back in 2005, the GCAs have seen its fair share of market changes. From the aftermath of the infamous dot-com bubble, the proliferation of data centres and content, the 2008 economic crash, a plethora of M&A activity, all the way to the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Throughout it all, the GCAs have remained a staple in the carrier community.

In line with this ever-changing landscape, Capacity has introduced some new trophies for this year including Best Data Centre, Best Environmental, Social, Governmental Initiative and Best Covid-19 Initiative, to name a few.

And as the 134 shortlisted companies eagerly wait to find out whether or not they’re taking home a coveted trophy this year, it should be noted that the standard of submissions were particularly high this year, making you all winners in your own right.

"The 2020 Global Carrier Awards submissions have been an outstanding demonstration of the dynamism, innovation and professionalism of our industry. The quality of all the entries has been top-notch and this has made the judging process extremely interesting, enjoyable and yet challenging when it came down to deciding on the shortlist. My sincere personal thanks go out to our eminent panel of judges who assumed this responsibility, dedicating a lot of their time to conscientiously and painstakingly read through, assess and compare the submissions in each category,” added Roberts.

“I have had the privilege of being the only person able to see all the entries and I’d like to pay tribute to all the companies who made submissions this year – you should all feel very proud of your accomplishments. I know you make me proud to be part of this industry community. Special congratulations of course to all the shortlisted companies – getting to this stage is already an achievement in itself! Now it’s the long wait to see who the winners will be tonight!"
