ITU endorses 3GPP 5G as 5G standard

The International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) has approved the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G technology as International Mobile Telecommunications-2020 (IMT-2020) 5G standard at the ITU-R Working Party 5D meeting.

The news follows a throughout assessment by the ITU to ensure that 3GPP 5G fulfils the entire set of the technological requirements of IMT-2020 5G standard.

By collaborating with global industrial partners, ITU has reached the IMT-2020 5G milestone on time supporting a global connected, intelligent world.

The IMT-2020 5G standard, is an overarching term developed by the ITU that covers a fifth-generation technology standard for mobile networks. In order to ensure quality, the ITU has posed tough requirements and developed strict assessment standards.

The assessment process has been going since 2016, reviewing all received candidate proposals based on 5G's three major use cases: enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC).

As a result, 3GPP 5G was approved as the technology meets the standards of IMT-2020 for supporting diverse 5G applications as far as service support, spectrum, and performance indicators.

The technology boasts a peak rate of over 20Gbps, latency of less than 1ms and enablement of one million connections per square kilometre.

The ITU-R WP 5D is a working group under the ITU responsible for the terrestrial radio access of International Mobile Telecommunications systems.

Over the past 20 years, the ITU-R WP 5D standardised 3G, 4G as well as the current 5G standard.

In related news, a new International Centre of Digital Innovation, known as I-CoDI, is to open in Geneva, Switzerland, following a partnership between the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the United Arab Emirates.
