Spain inks deal with operators to secure connectivity

Nadia Calviño, VP of the Government and minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation in Spain has signed an agreement with Spain’s operators to ensure network connectivity.

Under the terms of the agreement, all parties agree to ensure the connectivity, network operation and monitoring capabilities, as well as agility of their networks in response to incidents, especially those that support emergency services.

In addition, to Calviño, the document was signed by Tobías Martínez, CEO of Cellnex Telecom; José Miguel García, CEO of Euskaltel; Meinrad Spenger, the counsellor MasMovil delegate; Laurent Paillassot; CEO of Orange Spain; Emilio Gayo, president of Telefónica Spain; Antonio Coimbra, CEO of Vodafone Spain; Antonio García, the president of the National Association of Operators of Telecommunications and Internet Services (AOTEC); and  Antonio García.

Taking place via video conference the event was also attended by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Roberto Sánchez.

According to the agreement, all parties have made additional commitments to make connectivity service maintenance guarantees as part of the Royal Decree-Law 8/2020, on March 17, to support the economic and social impact of COVID-19.

Additionally, in times of state emergency calls made to the health care number 061 will be free for customers as well as free interconnections for operators, with each assuming their own network costs.

The parties have also agreed to develop special measures to expand, at no additional cost to the user, services associated with customers' mobile connectivity contracts for individuals, as well as the self-employed and small businesses.
