Executives from Nigeria’s government-owned satellite company are looking at offering services in the Asian market.

According to reports from Lagos and Bangkok, NigComSat staff this week met representatives of Thaicom, based in Thailand, to discuss working together.

The move follows an announcement two weeks ago that the Nigerian government will invest 3.4 billion naira ($9.38 million) in developing NigComSat’s offer.

This week the Nigerian ambassador to Thailand, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, presided over a meeting in Bangkok between NigComSat and Thaicom executives, said the African news agency Ecofin. The aim is to look at commercial possibilities in the Asian market for the Nigerian operator.

NigComSat is also talking to the Chinese government about the acquisition of additional satellites in order strengthen its commercial operations both in Nigeria and abroad, said the agency.

Two years ago China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) and the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim) said they would commit $550 million to NigComSat in order to fund the development and launch of two new satellites in addition to the existing satellite.
