DE-CIX has announced its further expansion into South East Asia with the opening of new internet exchange (IX) in Singapore.

Launching in the second half of 2020, the IX location will be fully operated by DE-CIX itself and will run on the DE-CIX Apollon interconnection platform, which allows the provisioning of different interconnection services like peering and cloud exchange.

“DE-CIX Singapore, as the heart of the ASEAN region, is just the next logical step we are taking in our international expansion. Whilst Singapore has been a major content hub for the region over the last decade, the key content and cloud-computing players have started to extend their footprint throughout ASEAN. This will pave the way in our further expansion in the region for creating a robust and secure interconnection ecosystem, with more to come in the next year or two,” said Ivo Ivanov (pictured), CEO of DE-CIX International. “There are millions of users around the ASEAN markets who both local and international operators want to have access to. The demand for low latency and the huge traffic volumes driven by video, payment, gaming, and other applications – like on-demand and live streaming of sports – is huge.”

The news follows DE-CIX entry into the Malaysian market with the launch of DE-CIX Malaysia. The new Malaysian internet exchange came about through a partnership with Starwing Technologies. Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur it will collectively take over the JBIX, which is an open and carrier class IX run by a team of certified network experts and has been operational since 2018.

At the end of 2019 Capacity spoke exclusively to Ivanov about the company’s plans for the rest of the region and he shared that “It’s just the start of the chain. DE-CIX will also look to enter other markets around Malaysia over the next 12-24 months.” To read the full interview in the December/January issue of Capacity Magazine, please click here.
