Sigma CTO Catherine Michel leaves telecoms industry to join Halma

Catherine Michel, one of the few women CTOs in telecoms, has left Sigma Systems to join a listed group specialising in safety, environmental analysis and medical systems.

She has become CTO of Halma, a group listed on the London Stock Exchange, after six years at Sigma and a previous 10 years at Tribold, a company she co-founded that was acquired by Sigma in 2013.

In May Sigma Systems said it was being bought by an Australian company, Hansen Technologies, for the equivalent of $117 million.

In her newly created role at Halma, which has annual revenues of £1.2 billion, Michel (pictured) will have global responsibility for the group’s data and IT strategy with a focus on enabling the group’s companies to become more data-driven both operationally and in the solutions that they provide to customers. She will report into Halma’s CEO Andrew Williams and be a member of Halma’s executive board. Michel will be based in Amersham, UK.

It’s a move well away from the telecoms industry for the first time in her career. As well as being a C-level director of Sigma Systems and its predecessor, Michel was on the board of the TM Forum, an IT-oriented industry organisation, until May, and is still an advisory board member of UK5G, a government sponsored body promoting the new mobile technology.

Williams said: “Technological and digital innovation is at the heart of Halma’s growth strategy as we continue to grow and scale. Catherine will further strengthen our expertise with her deep knowledge of how we can leverage our data more fully, both operationally and with our customers and partners.”
