TIM and Ericsson have partnered to successfully test the 5G cloud native core network at its laboratories in Turin, Italy.

The move is set to accelerate the evolution of TIM’s 5G network by enabling the adoption of solutions for network advanced operational management and to implement the most innovative principles of software architecture (service based architecture) within the new generation mobile networks.

"This important result joins many other records achieved by TIM and confirms the company's technological leadership and commitment to developing innovative solutions to guarantee our customers the best experience of communication through the 5G Digital Business Platform development, that can also enable Edge Computing solutions,” said Paolo Snidero, head of technology architectures and innovation, TIM. “This project underlines TIM’s network infrastructure quality, the most advanced and able to exploit 5G full potential."

Through the trials, they were able to prove procedures for monitoring and transmitting data traffic, defined by the international 3GPP standards, as well as the solutions for the automatic creation and configuration of network functions, for the automatic repair of faults and for updating core network on live network.

"The collaboration between TIM and Ericsson on 5G technologies continues with success," added Andrea Missori, key account manager digital services of Ericsson. "The teams’ skills involved and the new software’s features have allowed the deployment of a whole Core Network in a few minutes. The result achieved in TIM's laboratories in Turin shows that we are ready to face the 5G challenge in terms of network speed and flexibility, fundamental for the launch of innovative services for consumers and companies."

The adoption of native cloud technologies represents a fundamental step for the new 5G services development, allowing to optimise network resources in a dynamic, immediate and automatic way, in order to guarantee high quality of requested service, bringing the network intelligence and applications closer to the edge.
