The government of Romania has approved the sale of the former Romtelecom to Orange, according to reports from the country.

Fixed-line operator Romtelecom – now Telekom Romania – is 54% owned by Deutsche Telekom, with the rest belonging to the Romanian state.

Romanian publication Economica.net says that Deutsche Telekom board member Srini Gopalan (pictured) met minister of communications Alexandru Petrescu in Bucharest to discuss the plan.

The site said that Deutsche Telekom and Orange officials will visit Romania shortly to complete the deal.

“The agreement was given to sell the package of 54% of the shares held by Deutsche Telekom in the former Romtelecom,” says Economica.net.

At the same time the report says Bulgarian businessman Spas Roussev is poised to take over the mobile division of Telekom Romania, which is 30% owned by Greek operator OTE, in which Deutsche Telekom is a controlling shareholder.

Orange already has an operation in Romania, which last month said it had the largest mobile network in the country, according to a survey by mobile measuring company Ookla.
